Faces of Bioprinting: Meet CELLINK’s Application Engineer Joris

Name: Joris van Aken

Location: Gothenburg, Sweden

Position: Application Engineer Intern

Hi Joris! Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hi! I’m Joris from the Netherlands. I’m from Rotterdam and currently doing an internship for five months at CELLINK as an Application Engineer. I’m in my last year of my master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering at TU Delft. One of the things I like to do best is cooking, Italian food is my favorite. Besides that, I love traveling. So hopefully these two can be combined in the coming months with traveling to Italy for CELLINK.

What sparked your interest to work with 3D Bioprinting?

3D Bioprinting is something I already encountered during my bachelor’s and the first year of my master’s degree. My major is in Biomaterials and Tissue Biomechanics, so it’s right up my alley. It’s an amazing technology that I think can change the future of medicine. You can just print whatever you want right at the spot which is really cool!

What do you hope to see happen with 3D Bioprinting during your lifetime?

It would be incredible if it’s possible to print organs so there’s no need for organ donors anymore. Not just a couple of cell types but the complete organ with all its vascularization, nerves, lymphatics, ECM etc. Hopefully, this would happen sooner than within “a lifetime”, I think it will.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I’m quite good at belly dancing. I’ve also been part of a jazz band without knowing how to play a single instrument.

What was your dream job as a child?

I wanted to be a cook. If things don’t work out in the bioprinting world I might still go for it. Becoming the new Jamie Oliver.

If you could have one superpower what would it be?

To be able to travel back in time. Go back and discover foreign lands and invent all the stuff we have nowadays. Maybe also erase some of the stupid things I did in the past.
